Faith looked up when a chime sounded to indicate someone had entered the bakery. She’d arrived ten minutes early for her cake-tasting appointment and had been perusing the display cases. A part of her hoped Rachel would arrive early as well. She hadn’t seen or spoken to her in the two weeks since their kiss. She’d sent a couple of texts with no response. She’d decided to be patient and not give in to her urge to seek her out further. It helped that she’d known she would see her during the various stages of wedding planning. Hopefully, they would arrive soon because she’d already placed an order for three dozen cookies. She would keep a few for herself and take the rest to a holiday party one of her preferred vendors had invited her to that weekend.

“Here they are,” Faith said to the proprietor of the shop as Violet walked through the door with Carly behind her. Carly? She’d expected Rachel, but now she couldn’t recall if Violet had told her Rachel would be with her or she’d just assumed that.

Edward, the owner of the bakery, worked behind the counter, as well as helping out with the baking. His wife was the decorator and his brother handled the books. Several small bakeries in town had made Faith’s vendor list, but Edward’s had been one of her favorites since they first opened the shop two years before. Faith made the introductions, and they were led to a small bistro table by the side of the counter. One of the baker’s assistants placed a plate of cake samples between them. Each small square was filled with a different flavor and had a dollop of icing on top.

Edward briefly explained each of the combinations.

Violet picked up a chocolate sample with raspberry filling and took a bite. “Mmm. This is just as good as I remembered from the wedding expo.”

“Today, we’re going to narrow down design and flavors. Did you bring any pictures of cakes you’ve seen and liked—ideas you have for your wedding?” Edward asked.

Violet pulled out her tablet and unlocked the screen. She opened her photo app and turned the screen toward him. “I like several of these. But I’m open to suggestions.”

Edward swiped through the photos while Faith looked over his shoulder. Most of her choices were very ornate, and all kept to a monochromatic white-on-white palette.

“We can definitely work with these. Are there elements of any of them that you especially like? Maybe we can combine them and come up with something totally original for you,” Edward asked.

Violet turned the tablet back in front of her, and within seconds they had their heads together excitedly talking design. Faith stood and walked to the large window at the front of the shop. She stared out at the people walking by, still vaguely listening to Violet and Edward talk.

“Which flavor is your favorite?” Carly came to stand beside her. She held a square of vanilla cake with caramel buttercream. “This is the same bakery we used for our wedding.
